Creating Change Through Education: Charlotte’s Journey

Motion is proud to partner with the Tamara Gordon Foundation to support students with disabilities as they pursue their educational goals. This year, we are honoured to provide a scholarship to Charlotte (pictured above with Darin, Regional Manager, Motion Mississauga), a first-year student at McMaster University pursuing a double major in Social Psychology and Political Science. Passionate about disability advocacy, accessibility, and creating positive change, Charlotte is committed to using her education to help build a more inclusive future. Read Charlotte’s story below to learn more about her journey, her experiences as a university student, and the impact that support and community have had along the way.

My Journey

For as long as I can remember, attending university was one of my biggest goals. McMaster University had always been one of my top choices because of the opportunities it offered and the strong academic reputation it holds. I wanted to challenge myself, receive the best education possible, and pursue subjects that I was truly passionate about. Today, I am proud to be a first-year student at McMaster pursuing a double major in Social Psychology and Political Science.

These fields have always interested me because they combine two things I care deeply about: understanding people and creating change. My goal is to use what I learn to help others gain independence, confidence, and equal opportunities in their lives. As someone with a disability, I am especially passionate about advocating for people with disabilities and helping ensure they receive the support, representation, and respect they deserve. I want to be someone who can help create a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Growing up as a wheelchair user came with both physical and social challenges. Throughout my education, accessibility was often a barrier, whether it was a lack of ramps, elevators, or spaces large enough to accommodate me and my wheelchair. I also faced social challenges and misconceptions surrounding disability. At times, I felt excluded because of how I looked or because people didn’t fully understand my experiences. While those moments were difficult, they never defined me. What helped me overcome those challenges was the incredible support system around me. My family and friends have always been there to encourage me, guide me, and remind me of what I am capable of accomplishing.

Another major influence in my life has been wheelchair basketball. The sport gave me something incredibly valuable – a community. It was a place where I didn’t feel different because of my wheelchair. Instead, it became just one part of who I am. Being surrounded by people with similar experiences helped me gain confidence and taught me to embrace who I am without apology. The support and encouragement from my teammates and the wheelchair basketball community have had a lasting impact on my life and continue to inspire me every day.

My University Experience

My university experience has been amazing so far. Although I only started my first year recently, I have already learned so much and met incredible people along the way. The transition from high school to university has definitely been a big adjustment, but it has also been exciting. I love being able to explore topics that genuinely interest me and dive deeper into issues that I care about.

One of the projects I am currently working on explores funding discrepancies between Olympic and Paralympic sports. Having the opportunity to research topics that are meaningful to me makes learning both engaging and rewarding. Whenever I have the chance to choose a topic for a project, I almost always focus on disability-related issues. Creating greater awareness and understanding around disability is something I care deeply about, and I hope my education will allow me to contribute to those conversations in meaningful ways.

The support I have received throughout my journey means more than I can put into words. Knowing that others believe in my potential motivates me to continue working hard and pursuing my goals. It reminds me that I am part of something bigger than myself and inspires me to keep pushing forward. That support truly means the world to me.

Looking Ahead

As I continue my studies, I hope to build a career in either psychology or political science where I can advocate for greater equality and representation for people with disabilities. Whether through policy, advocacy, or direct support, I want to help create positive change and ensure that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else. I am excited for what the future holds and grateful for the people and experiences that have helped me get to where I am today.
