A Message from our CEO: Red Shirt Day & National AccessAbility Week 2024

In honour of Red Shirt Day (Wednesday, May 29) and National AccessAbility Week (May 26-June 1), Motion’s CEO Sue Gilpin shares how Motion is celebrating and bringing awareness to the contributions of person with disabilities in our communities as well as the role Motion plays in making life accessible for all Canadians.

Since Motion’s inception nearly 40 years, we have made it our mission to improve the lives of Canadians with disabilities with solutions that are delivered professionally, consistently, and with integrity. As Motion’s CEO since 2022 and a member of the Motion team since 2018, I feel fortunate to have witnessed our team’s ongoing dedication to serving our clients and our leadership in the mobility and accessibility space.

Working with clients of all ages and backgrounds, we strive to understand their unique needs and perspectives, and to find the right equipment that works for their lives. In 2023, we introduced Motion’s first Client Ambassadors Beau Hayward and Brianna Seewald. And in 2024 we were pleased to welcome Stacey Tetz and Jessica Oddi to the ambassador group, so that they could share their lived experiences with so many others who may be on a similar journey or who are trying to better understand what it’s like to live with a disability.

Earlier this week, we were also pleased to share the work of our client Desiree Da Costa. Desiree is an accomplished developmental service worker with a keen interest in pediatric healthcare and rehabilitation. Her book All About Me and Cerebral Palsy is based on her own lived experience with cerebral palsy while attending a specialized school for children with disabilities from junior kindergarten to Grade 1. We also recently had the pleasure of sitting down with our client Kurt, who is featured alongside fellow Motion clients and Motion employees in an updated video that can be found on our website (video link). When describing what it has been like to work with the Motion team for his equipment needs, Kurt shared: “Beyond just helping with the chair, I’ve found Motion was helpful in other aspects of life. Tools to be more confident and to be more able to do things in life, which was huge for my psyche.”

Grounded in kindness. Backed by knowledge. Fueled by real people. We’re on a mission to build solutions that provide independence and relationships that last. We’ve been writing that story together with Canadian clients, caregivers, and therapists seeking mobility and accessibility solutions for nearly 40 years. It’s words like Kurt’s that are a testament to our team’s passion for doing whatever we can to help our clients and ensure their highest quality of life. As Motion’s VP Jeff Preston shared in our video, which I echo wholeheartedly: “There isn’t a better feeling than helping someone get the equipment they need to make a difference in their life.” This is the viewpoint that our teams hold as we work to fulfill our vision of making life accessible for everyone.
