Through her journey, she discovered the importance of having the right support system and equipment to maintain her independence and active lifestyle. As a Motion Client Ambassador, Alicia is excited to connect with others, share her experiences, and help support individuals navigating their own accessibility journeys. Hello everyone, I’m grateful for the opportunity to share a little about myself and my journey. My name is Alicia Magliocco. I work in finance at my “big girl job,” and I’m also a full-time mom to my beautiful little girl. I grew up with a congenital spine condition called Spondylolisthesis, although it didn’t begin presenting symptoms until I was around six years old. Spondylolisthesis is a condition where a vertebra slips forward or backward over the vertebra below it. Ironically, a playground injury is what first brought attention to the condition, as it caused the instability in my spine to worsen when bending and extending. Despite my diagnosis, I was eventually cleared to participate in competitive cheerleading, which became a huge part of my life. Fast forward 21 years, and I found myself needing spinal surgery to correct several ongoing issues related to my condition. What was expected to be a routine six-hour surgery ultimately lasted nine hours and resulted in a spinal cord injury. My journey since then has not been easy, especially because I sustained a low-level injury with symptoms that often overlapped with symptoms expected during recovery. When I woke up from surgery, I explained that I couldn’t fully feel my legs, was struggling to walk, and was experiencing bladder complications. At the time, I was told these symptoms were normal. Because of this, my rehabilitation journey looked very different from many others living with spinal cord injuries. Previous Next Fast forward to today, and I’ve learned how to adapt to my new normal. Along the way, I’ve found an incredible community that has supported me during times when support from medical providers sometimes felt limited. That’s also where Motion became part of my journey. Motion is much more than a company that provides accessible equipment and products. They genuinely care about their clients, their independence, and their overall quality of life. My first wheelchair experience, like many people can probably relate to, was not ideal. My chair was too large, I received only the basic features because I didn’t yet understand what I truly needed, and my Occupational Therapist had limited experience fitting rigid manual wheelchairs. When it came time for my second chair, Motion completely changed the experience for me. They were much more involved throughout the process, helping ensure I had equipment that truly fit both my needs and my lifestyle. Most recently, Motion once again worked alongside my Occupational Therapist to help me make the best decisions possible. Together, they made sure I had a chair that fit properly, supported long days of use, allowed for easier transfers, and kept up with my busy lifestyle as a mom. They helped me check every box that mattered, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful. As a Client Ambassador, I’m excited to build relationships with both prospective and current Motion clients. I enjoy discussing innovative products and services, sharing personal insights, and offering encouragement based on my own experiences. Being able to connect with others, provide meaningful feedback, and help support people throughout their own journeys is something I truly value. Feel free to follow me on my Instagram account and TikTok @missalicia.mag Thanks for the read. Alicia This material does not constitute medical advice. It is intended for informational purposes only.
